Roman Abramovich Speaks Out: His Heartfelt Farewell to Chelsea Fans

Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, recently opened up in a rare, candid interview where he shared his deep desire for a proper farewell to the fans who stood by the club through his era.

A Sudden Exit Amid Global Turmoil

Abramovich, a Russian billionaire, was forced to step down from his role at Chelsea in March 2022 after the UK government imposed sanctions related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This abrupt intervention brought an end to nearly two decades of Abramovich’s stewardship of the club.

Just days before these sanctions, Abramovich announced his difficult decision to sell Chelsea — a move that caused him considerable pain, showing just how much the club meant to him.

A New Chapter Under New Owners

After months of uncertainty, a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired Chelsea for £4.25 billion, marking the beginning of a new era for the Blues.

The Abramovich Legacy: 21 Major Trophies

From 2003 to 2022, Abramovich transformed Chelsea from a middling club into a football powerhouse, guiding them to an astonishing 21 major trophies, including:

Premier League titles
UEFA Champions League victories
FA Cups
And much more

His reign redefined the club’s global stature and left an indelible mark on English football.

Inside the Sale: A Desire to Reconnect

In the revealing book Sanctioned: The Inside Story of the Sale of Chelsea FC by journalist Nick Purewal, Abramovich delves into the sale process and expresses his hope for reconciliation and goodwill with Chelsea supporters. Despite the political pressures and sudden changes, his heart remains with the club and its loyal fanbase.

Looking Ahead

Roman Abramovich’s chapter at Chelsea may have closed abruptly, but his legacy, passion, and connection to the fans remain. As Chelsea moves forward under new ownership, many hope that the spirit Abramovich fostered will continue to inspire success on and off the pitch.
